Carlos Martinez Merits Fantasy Baseball Consideration as a Starter
There have been many questions regarding how the Cardinals rotation would form, many of which are relevant to fantasy baseball. The status of RP Giovanny Gallegos has remained in question, and many have wondered whether he’d start the year as the team’s closer. While that has yet to be answered, we have gotten an answer about one of the considered alternative to Gallegos in the closer spot: Carlos Martinez.
Once one of the Cardinals best starting pitchers, Martinez moved to the bullpen last year after returning from injury. But according to reports, Martinez will officially start the season in the Cardinals starting rotation.
Here is a tweet from Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
As Martinez emerges as a starter, he becomes an incredibly intriguing option in most fantasy leagues. Martinez has had a K9 total above 8 each year since 2014. Further, he has posted a sub 3.50 ERA four of the last five years. In 167 innings over the last two seasons, Martinez only allowed 58 earned runs. And in 2018, Martinez started 18 games and allowed 3 or less earned runs in 14 of those outings.
Martinez should be rostered in most leagues as he transitions back to the starting rotation. In most points leagues, middle relievers and set-up pitchers don’t garner much attention, so Martinez was under the radar, but he merits a pickup in any redraft. At only 28 years old, he also merits attention in dynasty leagues moving forward.
